The Kopánka Theatre Ensemble (DISK) has been active on the Slovak amateur theatrical scene since 1955. It began by staging plays of Slovak and world-famous authors.

In 1986, DISK began to cooperate with Blaho Uhlár, who became its artistic and stage director. This was a turning point for DISK. Under his leadership, DISK focussed on devised theatre, bringing current themes to the stage. The ensemble began to garner awards for its original work and performed at major amateur theatre festivals in Slovakia and abroad.

In 1993, the ensemble began to collaborate with Dušan Vicen, a stage director, who continued working in devised theatre with plays focused on a central theme and characterized by a strong artistic component. The ensemble built on the successes of previous periods by winning awards and receiving invitations to prestigious amateur theatre festivals.

In 2006, Blaho Uhlár returned to DISK. Under his leadership, the ensemble transformed a cellar in the Kopánka community centre into a stage area – the Theatre Studio – where DISK still regularly reruns its standard plays. This period was characterized by creating stage performances that mercilessly and without holding back revealed the lowest layers of life in our society.

After Blaho Uhlár’s death, the ensemble reestablished collaboration with Dušan Vicen, who is the current artistic and stage director. For a number of years, the DISK ensemble, comprised of 14 actors, has been staging new original performances, which are the result of active collaboration between all the actors, in each theatrical season.

The ensemble has premiered 80 plays with more than 1,300 reruns over 71 years. It has received the award for the best amateur stage performance in Slovakia 4-times – The Creative Achievement of the Year. It gives guest performances across Slovakia   and abroad.
